Meta has unveiled RealityOS, a custom operating system built from the ground up to power its upcoming line of augmented reality (AR) glasses, expected to launch later this year. Unlike Meta Quest’s VR software, RealityOS is focused on mixed reality experiences that integrate seamlessly into daily life — from hands-free messaging to real-time object recognition.
Designed to work with Meta’s AI models, RealityOS supports voice input, gesture navigation, contextual overlays, and even private holographic notifications. It’s optimized for low-latency performance on wearable hardware and can sync with Meta apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram in real-time.
The new OS will first roll out on the Meta Horizon Glasses, a lightweight AR headset with a transparent display and bone-conduction audio.
