Microsoft has announced a strategic $2 billion investment in Sarvam AI, an India-based generative AI startup known for building large language models (LLMs) in native Indian languages. This marks one of Microsoft’s largest international AI investments to date and reflects growing interest in regional innovation ecosystems.
Sarvam AI focuses on building multilingual AI tools for enterprises, customer support platforms, and e-governance applications. The funding will help scale its model training infrastructure using Microsoft Azure, and integrate with Microsoft Copilot, Teams, and other services.
This partnership is also seen as a move to counter Google’s and OpenAI’s expansion in Asia, giving Microsoft an edge in AI localization and regional accessibility.
